The Frostrune

My long-time reader will be aware that I feel in my heart that all Viking themed things are awesome.  Frostrune is a mobile game based in Viking myths.  Naturally I bought it as soon as I came across it.

The easiest way to describe this game is ‘Like Myst except with Viking Mythology’.  The game isn’t very long and the puzzles are not as involved as a Myst game.  I found the difficulty to be just about right – difficult enough to be somewhat taxing but never so much that I got frustrated.

Overall it’s a fun little adventure and worth getting if you have a few dollars to spare.

Until Dawn : Rush of Blood

I received a Playstation VR for Christmas from my in-laws (who instantly went up a notch on the awesome scale) but I didn’t receive any games so I had to content myself with the demo disc that game with the system.  I started the year off with the laughable goal of spending less than I earn which has sadly been a failure but did prevent me from making any un-budgeted 60$ purchases. While poking around Amazon one day I discovered that Rush of Blood was available for 10$ and since I already had a bundle of crap in my cart for my wife and son’s birthdays ( which unfortunately for my budget are only three days apart ) I figured this game would only be a rounding error.

Rush of Blood is on the demo disc so I knew what I was getting into. Each level consists of a short roller coaster ride where you are armed with two handguns and everything tries to kill you.  This was typically the demo that I’d let friends try when they tested the Playstation VR unless small children were present.  In my opinion it’s a rather sub-part rail shooter that was rushed out to be available for the launch of a new gaming platform.  I wouldn’t have paid full price for it but I figured the 10$ investment would be worth it to have an actual retail game for the VR.  (In true form Sony made the game free to  Playstation  Plus subscribers recently once again proving you should never pay for Playstation software).

I made one minor change to my play style when I started the full retail version of Rush of Blood.  I dug out my Playstation Move controllers and paired them up to my Playstation 4.  It turns out that playing this game with motion controllers MAKES IT AWESOME. I could look at my hands in VR and they would appear to be where I thought my real hands should be.  I could control them independently and shoot two targets at once.  The sense of immersion was complete.  I forgot that I was in a chair in my office and unfortunately I forgot there was a wall to my left.  Once I tried to point my gun at a bad guy only to find that I couldn’t physically orient my arm in the desired direction.  It was because back in the real world the previously mentioned wall stubbornly refused to give way.

I usually played 15-20 minutes at a time before going to bed but the game would get me so wound up I’d have a hard time getting to sleep.  The game is really short so It only took me about two weeks to finish all of the mission.  The short duration of each level was the perfect way to begin acclimating to VR.

Bravely Second Demo – The Ballad of the Three Cavaliers

Not much to say about this game, it was just a demo.  I normally wouldn’t write about a demo but this demo was over 10 hours long so I figured it warranted a mention.  Even so you can probably tell by the fact that I’m posting this almost a year late that it wasn’t a high priority on my list of things to write about.  I highly approve of the strategy of creating demos that are separate and supplementary to the full version of a particular game.  I enjoyed the original Bravely Default Demo quite a bit and I found this one similarly enjoyable.  I’ve been playing the full version of Bravely Second off-and-on since beating the demo and if I ever get to the end of that I’ll do a proper writeup.

Shovel Knight : Specter of Torment

Nintendo Switch launch day happened to be my day off and the local Fred Meyer is often overlooked by console hunters on launch day.  I wanted one really badly but my wife suggested I call and ask if they had any in stock.  The sales guy coyly said they did have a few left in stock and after that I pretty much had to get one.  It turned out that Fred Meyer had a giant pile of about 30 consoles and we had our pick.  I had taken my daughter with me and I let her pick the color.  I got the console home but I hadn’t purchased any games so it was a pretty expensive paper weight.  I poked around the eshop looking for a cheap game but the only cheap title I could find was Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment for about $10.  It turned out to be a great purchase!  Specter Knight has a really satisfying ‘dash slash’ ability that I found particularly enjoyable to use.  I had a lot of fun with this game and I’d consider looking into other Shovel Knight games in the future.

Final Fantasy Explorers

Holy dull game Batman!  This game was unbelievably boring.  It’s almost not even a game.  It was really more of a tech demo than an actual game.  The game consists of exploring a continent by completing a series of missions.  Once you have completed a mission you are automatically warped back to the single town that is available in the game where you can select a new mission that let you explore further away areas.  There is no real story to follow that was discernible,  Something about crystals.  Square-Enix offered a collector’s edition of the game when they released it and I am SUPER glad I didn’t sink any money into it.  They’ve offered collector’s editions of several games now that turned out to be total duds.  I think this game could be turned into something interesting with more development effort but this release was barely a real game.

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze

I had this one sitting on the shelf for a long, long time.  I really enjoyed ‘Donkey Kong Country Returns’ and I was still hoping the Wii U would catch on when this game was announced so I was excited.  It too me a long time to get around to it and I ended up disappointed.  The level design didn’t really click with me like the previous game.  It’s not a bad game but it’s not great.  I was ready to move on when I was done.

Metroid : Federation Force

Date Completed: July 8th, 2017

I thought this would be a fun game to play with my kids.  In spite of the goofy premise we had all enjoyed playing Triforce Heroes together and this game appeared to offer a similar dynamic.  Sadly it fell short on that account.

The game includes download play so you only need a single cartridge for multiple players but what they don’t tell you is that download play only works for the ‘Blast-Ball’ mode and not the main story.  So this ended up being a mostly single player experience.

I actually enjoyed the level design and found it to be better than I expected.  Not award winning but the detail was pretty good for a game of this type.  It’s clear the game was meant to be played by multiple players – some of the areas have four distinct wings that were clearly meant to be cleared by four distinct individuals.  I tried playing online and they were a lot more fun with randoms than playing alone.  Unfortunately it was hard to find partners online.  I seemed to have the best luck around 6-8  PM.

Missions were about 10-30 minutes each if I was playing alone.  This time could be cut drastically if I was playing online.

The only other thing I could mention is that neither of my boys were able to manage the controls.  I didn’t find any of the control options particularly intuitive which is especially strange since I thought first-person shooter controls were basically a solved problem in 2017.

Overall the game wasn’t awful but wasn’t especially memorable either.  I think it would have been a lot of fun as a local multiplayer game but without download play the cost of entry is just too high.
